Even more amazing is there are actual websites where you can upload your sob story and for a small monthly fee they'll handle the donation process for you and send you the proceeds through Paypal. A visit to some of these websites revealed such headlines as:

Some were a bit more self serving such as:

Some posters were appealing to the soft hearts of animal lovers by asking for donations for their dog or cat.
Just how well does this rather unconventional tactic work? There are some reports of success including a paramedic who consistently earned more than $1,000 a week in donations from his website. Others report lesser degrees of success raising anywhere from nothing to several hundred dollars per month. But, when you consider how little is being done to earn this money, it's still rather surprising.
A quick look at the website http://www.cyberbeg.com shows this concept in action. A participant can sign up to receive their own page where they tell their story, arouse pity, and solicit donations. Donations are sent directly to the participant's Paypal account. The site bills itself as a site of "hope" for those who are in need of an infusion of cash. This site with it's unique concept has received media attention from a variety of outlets including the New York Times and CNN. Could cyberbegging become big business?"

"The Birth of Cyberbegging

Diamond is a small part of a new phenomenon that's swept the Internet. Asking strangers online to help pay back debts is known as cyberbegging, or E-panhandling, and it is the brainchild of 30-year-old Karyn Bosnak.

A Chicago native, Bosnak migrated to New York in 2000, immediately becoming a "Sex and the City" style shopaholic. After racking up more than $20,000 in credit card debt from designer handbags and expensive clothes, she decided to ask the public to help her pay the bills.

In a moment of online inspiration, Bosnak created SaveKaryn.com, asking anyone who visited her Web site to help chop down her debt, one dollar at a time. It worked.

Bosnak says she received about $13,000 of "cold, hard cash" in online donations. Many others have followed in her footsteps, begging for money for practically anything -- from breast enhancement to money for a divorce. The majority of these attempts are fruitless, but not all of them."

And the appeals are heart-wrenching. A single mom with no money to pay her bills; an unemployed construction worker about to lose his house. And, of course, lots of families who can't afford gifts for Christmas.

Certainly some of these appeals are scams, but many appear to be legitimate pleas for help.

Michael Arthur of Frederick, Md., says he debated for weeks before placing an ad called "Santa, Are You Out There?" on craigslist:

I'm a partially disabled single father with two young sons, seven and eight. They deserve to get a few nice toys and things for Christmas. They are really good kids. I don't make enough money to be able to buy them anything. … If anyone out there could possibly help me obtain a few toys for my children please let me know. I hate to beg, but I will for my children.

Arthur works at a local veterinarian's office, despite his back problems. But he's had a hard time making ends meet. So he decided it was worth a shot.

Arthur says the bad economy forced him to swallow his pride."
